THREE SMALL STEPS
How to calculate cubic yards from your measurements
01
Choose units and shapes
Use feet for length and width with inches for depth, or meters with centimeters for depth. Choose a rectangle, circle, triangle, circular ring or known surface area. Decimals and fractions such as 3 1/2 are accepted. A triangle needs its perpendicular height, not the length of a sloping edge.
02
Combine the sections of your project
Add up to 20 non-overlapping sections, each with its own depth. The calculator adds the volumes before applying your optional extra percentage. Use an extra allowance only when your project or supplier calls for one; it does not model compaction or select a construction depth.
03
Read the volume and optional price
See the combined volume in cubic yards, cubic meters and cubic feet. Enter a price per cubic yard, cubic meter or cubic foot to estimate material cost. Copy or download the measurements, allowance and results. Delivery and taxes are not included.
BEFORE YOU START
Good to know
The feet-and-inches shortcut
For a rectangle, cubic yards = length in feet × width in feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. Dividing the depth by 12 converts inches to feet; dividing cubic feet by 27 converts to cubic yards. For metric inputs, first divide depth in centimeters by 100, then multiply length × width × depth to get m³.
Circles, triangles and rings
Multiply surface area by depth, with compatible units. A circle’s area is π × diameter² ÷ 4. A triangle’s area is base × perpendicular height ÷ 2. A circular ring’s area is π × (outer diameter² − inner diameter²) ÷ 4. Only the ring counts, so the central opening is excluded.
Geometric volume and order quantities
This estimates the space to fill, not the weight of a material. Settling, compaction, irregular ground and supplier order increments may change the quantity to buy. Use the Gravel Calculator when you also need a density-based weight. Calculations stay in your browser and reload clears the inputs.
QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
How many cubic yards cover 12 feet by 12 feet at 3 inches deep?
Calculate 12 × 12 × 3 ÷ 324 = 1.3333 cubic yards, or 36 cubic feet, before any extra. With 10% extra, the estimate is 1.4667 cubic yards or 39.6 cubic feet. At $54 per cubic yard, the material cost is $79.20. Price uses the unrounded volume.
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet because one yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. A square yard measures area, while a cubic yard measures volume; you also need a depth to convert surface area into volume.
How do I convert cubic yards to cubic meters?
Multiply cubic yards by 0.764554857984 to get cubic meters. Divide cubic meters by the same factor to get cubic yards. Both results are shown together, including any extra allowance. Switching the measurement system converts the entered dimensions without changing the physical project, apart from rounding.
Can I calculate mulch, soil, gravel and concrete volume?
Yes. The geometric volume calculation is the same for any material occupying that space. The calculator does not choose a suitable product or determine concrete strength, structural thickness, shrinkage, settling or compaction. Confirm the order quantity and specification for your actual project.
How do I measure an irregular area or a circular border?
Divide an irregular surface into rectangles, triangles or circles that do not overlap, then add each section. For a circular border around a pool or flower bed, choose Circular ring and enter the outer and inner diameters. The outer diameter must exceed the inner diameter. Use I know the area if you already have a measured surface.
Can this calculator convert cubic yards into tons?
Volume alone does not determine weight: the material’s loose bulk density is also needed. Use the linked Gravel Calculator for gravel weight estimates. Here, optional prices are per unit of volume; a supplier’s price per ton cannot be entered as though it were per cubic yard.
