Good to know
One icon, several images
An ICO file usually stores the same icon at several sizes, so that Windows and browsers can pick the sharpest one.
Old and new icon formats
Bitmap images from classic Windows icons and PNG images from modern icons are both read, in colors from 1-bit to 32-bit.
Small icons stay small
Each JPG keeps the original pixel size of its image. Enlarging a 16 × 16 icon would only make it blurry.
Frequently asked questions
Can one ICO file contain several image sizes?
Yes. An ICO can contain several icon images at different sizes. This tool lists the supported images so you can select the one you need and save it as JPG. Choose a background because JPG does not preserve transparency.
Why do the transparent parts of my icon turn white?
JPG cannot store transparency. Choose another background color, or download the PNG version, which keeps transparent areas.
Can I convert a .cur cursor file?
No. Cursor files use a similar format, but this tool only opens ICO icons.
Which size inside the icon should I use?
Use the largest image for documents and presentations. Sizes of 32 × 32 pixels and below are designed for browser tabs and file lists.
