The right format for the job
A practical guide to JPEG, PNG and WebP.
JPEG: a practical choice for photographs
JPEG works well for photographs with many colors. Its adjustable quality can reduce file size, at the cost of detail. It does not support transparency: this toolkit fills transparent areas with your chosen background color.
PNG: keep transparent areas
Choose PNG for graphics that need transparency. A PNG export may be larger than the original. The quality slider used for JPEG and WebP does not provide equivalent target-size compression for PNG, so this toolkit does not offer it.
WebP: useful when your destination accepts it
WebP can combine smaller files with transparency. Check that the site or application receiving your images accepts it. The converter checks that your browser actually produced the selected format, rather than changing a file extension. Some browsers, such as Safari, cannot create WebP files; the converter then offers JPEG and PNG.
Preview the actual file
The comparison window shows the original alongside the real export. Inspect edges, fine text and transparent areas. Repeated conversion between lossy formats can discard more detail, so keep your original files.
